Commercial Locksmith Services: What Your Business Needs
Commercial locksmith work is different from residential in a few ways that matter. The volume is higher, the stakes are higher, and some requirements are specific to commercial properties.
Master key systems are the most common thing I set up for businesses. Different keys open different combinations of doors — a floor manager can access their wing but not accounting, ownership can access everything. Once you have a master system in place, you can restructure access without replacing hardware. Worth setting up right from the start because retrofitting it later is a pain.
Access control — key fobs, cards, PIN pads — goes further than mechanical keys. Every entry gets logged. When someone leaves the company, you deactivate their credential in the software, no locksmith visit required. For businesses with higher turnover or sensitive areas, it is often worth the upfront cost.
On hardware: commercial doors get used hundreds of times a day. Grade 1 locks, heavy-duty hinges, proper strike plates with three-inch screws. The cheap stuff fails fast and usually at the worst possible time.
One thing people do not always know: Florida fire code requires specific panic bar hardware on certain commercial exit doors. If your building has that requirement and does not have compliant hardware, you are exposed to fines and liability. I install code-compliant exit hardware and can tell you whether your current setup meets the requirement.
Commercial locks also need maintenance. A residential deadbolt used twice a day lasts twenty years. A commercial lock used two hundred times a day needs periodic inspection. One loose screw in the wrong place becomes an emergency at 2am — and I have gotten those calls too.
