Smart Locks vs. Traditional Locks: Which Is Right for You?

I install both. The honest answer is it depends on how you actually live in your house.

Smart locks make sense if you manage access for other people β€” rental guests, housekeepers, dog walkers, family with irregular schedules. You hand out a code that expires on a specific date, see when it was used, delete it without cutting a new key. For vacation rentals in the Davenport area, smart locks are basically standard at this point.

They are less useful if you live alone and just need a door that locks. The convenience of keyless entry is real, but so is the battery replacement every six to twelve months and the occasional app update. Some people love it. Some find it annoying.

Traditional deadbolts are simpler. No batteries, no app, no Bluetooth pairing. They work in a power outage, they work when your phone is dead, and a Grade 1 deadbolt properly installed is not easy to defeat. Nothing wrong with them.

The setup I recommend most often: a smart deadbolt that also has a physical key cylinder. You get the app and codes, with a traditional key as backup when the battery dies at midnight. Best of both without giving anything up.

One thing that gets overlooked: the technology of the lock matters less than the installation. A $300 smart lock on a weak door frame with short strike plate screws is less secure than a $60 deadbolt installed correctly. The door and frame matter as much as the lock.
