How a Master Key System Works
Every lock in the system is keyed so it opens with its own key and with one or more higher-level keys:
- Change keys open a single door — an office, a storage room, a unit.
- Sub-master keys open a group of doors, such as one department or one floor.
- The master key opens every door in the system.
A cleaning crew can have one key for the areas they service, a manager can have one key for their floor, and the owner carries one key for everything.
Keeping Keys Under Control
A master key system works best when you know where every key is. We label keys, keep a record of which key opens which lock, and help you set a simple sign-out routine. When a key goes missing, we rekey only the affected locks instead of starting over.
Planning Your System
- Walkthrough — we list your doors and who needs access to each.
- Key chart — we design the levels and keep a record of which key opens which lock.
- Install — we rekey or replace cylinders, then cut and label the keys.
- Maintain — when staff changes, we rekey only the affected locks.
