How Rekeying Works
Inside every lock cylinder is a set of small pins that line up with the cuts on your key. To rekey, we take out the cylinder, replace the pins with a new set and cut new keys to match. The lock stays on your door and looks exactly the same — but the old keys no longer turn it.
When to Rekey
- You just moved in. In a resale home you don't know how many copies of the old keys are out there, and in a new build the builder's crews may have had access.
- A key was lost or stolen.
- A tenant, roommate, guest or contractor moved on and still has a key.
- You're tired of carrying a key for every door and want one key for the whole house.
Landlords and vacation rental owners often rekey between tenants or after a key goes missing — it's quicker and less expensive than new locks for every door.
Rekey or Replace?
If your locks work smoothly and you're happy with them, rekeying is usually the better value. If a lock is worn, sticking or damaged after a break-in attempt, or you want a sturdier deadbolt, see our lock installation and replacement service. Want to go keyless? Smart lock installation starts at $150, including app setup.
